Tendon injury
Personal injury and the tendons
The tendon is what is used to connect muscles to bones. A tendon injury is where the fibre of the tendon is torn due to impact from external forces. At the site of the tear, a fluid leaks out of the damaged tendon in order to aid the healing process; however the fluid also sticks to undamaged fibres causing stiffness. The tendon itself has no nerve endings, so the pain associated with the personal injury is due to undamaged tendon fibres being able to move around too much.
Tendon injury repair
Rest is the main prescription for a tendon injury. Compression bandages or a plaster cast can also help to support the injured area, aiding the healing process. As a general guideline a tendon will usually take around six weeks to recover depending on the injury circumstances and its severity. However if a tendon injury is more severe, surgery may be necessary and these types of tendon injuries can take several months to fully heal.
