Shoulder injury

Personal injury and the shoulder

The shoulder joint consists of a complex system of muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. It is vulnerable to personal injury because it is one of the most mobile and flexible joints in the human body.

The complex physiology of the shoulder means that it can be injured in many different ways. It can suffer nerve damage, muscle damage, dislocations, fractures and rotator cuff injuries. The pain that results from a personal injury of the shoulder can be frustrating because of the importance of the shoulder to everyday activities.

Shoulder injury rehabilitation

The aim of a shoulder injury rehabilitation programme is to restore strength, flexibility and movement. A physiotherapist will oversee the programme to ensure that full function, or as much function as possible, is regained.

Healing a shoulder injury that contains a broken bone is not as simple as the healing of other types of broken bones. The many planes of movement mean that immobilising the joint / bone in a cast is not possible. Instead of a cast, a sling must be used. If the shoulder injury is severe, a surgical procedure may be required in order to ensure the correct alginment before healing can begin.
