Scarring

Personal Injury and scarring

A scar is part of the natural recovery process after an area of the skin has been damaged in a personal injury. There are several factors that affect how a scar will appear such as the type and severity of the injury, and how old the sufferer.

Types of scarring

There are three types of scars that may occur after a personal injury to the skin.

Keloid scars are those which extend beyond the area of the original injury. These types of scars can begin to affect mobility over time.

Contracture scars occur most often as a result of a serious burn. These type of scars cause a tightening of the area of skin and may possibly hinder the person’s ability to move.

Hypertrophic scars do not extend beyond the injury site. They are areas of tissue that have raised and / or slightly inflamed.

Scarring treatment and recovery

The type of treatment a scar will receive will depend on the type of scar that has resulted from the personal injury. Scars are difficult to treat and the amount of recovery achieved varies on a case-by-case basis. The types of options available include silicone application, surgery, or laser treatement.
