Burns

Personal injury and burns

A burn results from sustained exposure to unbearable levels of heat. This heat can be caused by friction, electricity, chemicals, or radiation (eg fire). A burn can potentially lead to a permanent scar if the exposure time and the level of heat are high enough.

Types of burn

Burns have three levels of classification to denote their severity. Each level of severity is denoted by a degree.
First degree burns causes the skin to turn red and can be painful to the touch, such as a mild sun burn. This type of burn causes minimal damage to the skin.

Second degree burns are where both the inner and the outer layers of skin are affected. There will be considerable pain, and often some swelling and blistering.

The most severe type of burn is known as a third degree burn, and they affect every layer of the skin. Third degree burns take a very long time to heal because the skin tissue and all of its structures are destroyed. Permanent scarring is very common with this type of burn.

Recovering from burns

The severity of the burn and its location are the main factors with how the skin will recover and how long it will take. Short-term and less serious treatments of burns include things like antibiotics (to avoid infection), the application of creams, bandages and pressure garments. More serious burns may have to be treated with surgery and skin grafting in order to aid the body’s natural healing process.
