Neck injury

Personal injury and the neck

A neck injury refers to the damage of the muscles and/or the tissue of the neck. Any damage that may go beyond this, say to the spinal column or cord, would not be referred to as a neck injury but as a spinal injury.

Types of neck injury

Neck injuries are a common result from road traffic accidents. This is because of the whiplash style damage that can occur from sudden acceleration / deceleration. There are two types of neck injury:

A muscle strain is a tear of the fibres in the muscles of the neck. A muscle strain will cause stiffness, headaches and dizziness. A muscle strain is a very common injury in road traffic accidents that cause whiplash.

A stinger is a personal injury that refers to damage to the nerves within the neck. A stinger’s symptoms include a burning sensation in the neck, which in some cases may even extend down the arms.

Neck injury rehabilitation

The rehabilitation of neck injuries occurs in three phases. During the first phase, the objective is to treat the pain and inflammation. After this has been managed a plan is set in place to complete the neck injury treatment. Further treatment may include ultrasound, electrical stimulation, mobilisation exercises or injections. The second phase aims to improve strength and mobility through specific exercises and tasks. The third phase aims to minimise the potential of the neck injury occurring again.
