Pedestrian accident

Personal injury as a pedestrian

Pedestrians have the least amount of protection of any road user. This makes them the most vulnerable to a more serious personal injury should an accident occur. Pedestrians receive personal injuries most often through an impact with a motor vehicle.

Pedestrian accident statistics

In 1967 there were 2,964 pedestrian fatalities. Road safety measures introduced over time have reduced this to 646 fatalities as of 2007.

In particular, fatalities for children aged 14 and under have largely decreased. One reason for this is that fewer children are walking as a mode of transport, and so they are not exposed to traffic risks as often. Personal injury as a pedestrian is the second most common cause of fatality for children aged 5-14.

The majority of fatal accidents for pedestrians are traffic related, however very young children are in fact more likely to experience non-traffic related personal injury, such as driveway and pavement injuries.

Types of pedestrian accident

Personal injury as a pedestrian is often caused by impact with a motor vehicle. This is usually as a result of driver error, perhaps combined with the pedestrian not judging the traffic conditions appropriately.
