Child accident
Child accidents and personal injury
On average there are approximately 5,000 child accidents treated by hospitals every day (so not including GP surgeries and home treatments). Child accidents are the biggest cause of death for children over the age of one, over and above illnesses and diseases.
Types of child accident
Falls and scalds are the two most common methods of non-serious child personal injury. Children are more susceptible, particularly toddlers, because their sense of balance and awareness is not fully developed.
Road accidents are the main reason for a more serious personal injury to a child. Over 2,500 children were admitted to hospital with a very serious injury in 2008.
